Panners Win Thriller Again

June 18, 2001, Daily News-Miner

The 2001 version of the Alaska Goldpanners baseball team sure knows how to keep fans in the seats.

For the second straight night, the Goldpanners scored the winning runs in their last at bat as they defeated the Ukiah, Calif., Victory Dons 3-1 on a balmy Sunday evening at Growden Memorial Park.

Saturday night, the Panners erased a 7-0 deficit with seven runs in the eighth inning and scored the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth to claim an 8-7 victory.

After losing the first five games of the season, the Panners have now won four straight and can even their overall record with a victory in tonight's 7 p.m. contest against Ukiah.

Tony Perez opened the Panners' winning rally with a walk and moved to second on Marc Tugwell's sacrifice bunt. Tom Carrow delivered his second single of the game to move Perez to third.

Ukiah pitcher then elected to walk Todd Leathers, Saturday night's hero, to load the bases and set up a double-play situation. The strategy almost worked.

Matt Rebout hit a grounder to second base and the Dons attempted to turn the double play. Leathers was forced out at second, but the throw to first was in the dirt and both Perez and Carrow scored on the play.

After the Panners went ahead in the eighth, Ukiah made things interesting in the top of the ninth as the visitors from California loaded the bases with two outs before Panner reliever Chris Dunwell struck out Ukiah designated hitter Shane Roberts to end the game.

It marked the second time in the last week that the Panners have gotten out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth inning to claim a victory. Tony Perez accomplished the feat in the Panners' first win of the season against the Mat-Su Miners.

Goldpanner starter Andy Davidson scattered six hits in eight innings to earn the win. He had eight strikeouts and walked just one.

The Panners jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Carrow singled home Perez. Ukiah tied the score in the fourth when Anthony Gonzalez scored on a hit by Brandon Baarstad. Gonzalez had three of Ukiah's six hits, including a double.
