It was a single pack of Topps baseball cards that served as the catalyst for the Goldpanners’ entry into the trading card market. It was in that very first green wax pack -- stale gum and all -- that your storyteller found it.. a Don Mattingly card! Never mind that it was just Don’s all-star card, and not the more valuable player card -- those nuances of supply and demand were yet to be discovered. However, the spark was lit and the push for official Alaska Goldpanners baseball cards was on.
Since 1987, the club has produced no less than twenty different card sets -- and not only for Fairbanks, but for the entire Alaska Baseball League as well. The very first offerings were printed together and later cut seperately to become the “1988 Team” and the “1960’s All Stars” sets.
Almost immediately, the national press picked up on the Fairbanks entrance into the market. Due to the abundance of cards representing super-famous stars as they were when teenagers, the sets have always attracted a greater deal of attention than might be expected for a non major league team. The Barry Bonds card, featuring a picture of the home run king as a fresh faced (and quite less muscled) nineteen-year-old, is one of the most popular offerings to have been produced by the Goldpanners’ outfit -- known as “Scratch ‘n Spit Baseball Cards.”
As cool as it is to see your favorite ballplayer as he looked before time and moneyball had a chance to change his demeanor, there is quite another niche which makes Goldpanners’ cards even more interesting. As it turns out, one of those important nuances in the card market is the desirability and overwhelming popularity of “all-time first cards.” And because the Goldpanners’ ballplayers are usually teenaged, rarely have they been featured on cards prior to their summers in Fairbanks.
The chronological placement of the “Goldpanners era” in the developmental lives of future stars provides a perfect marriage with the collectible aspect of the cards. Never was this more apparent than when Jason Giambi, fresh off of winning the American League MVP award with Oakland, signed a multi-year contract with the New York Yankees. Immediately, dealers from around the world were seeking his all-time first card -- which just happened to be card #6 in the 1990 Team Set. Since that time, nearly every Goldpanner to make the major leagues has the picture on their all-time first card representing them in a Goldpanners uniform.. including latest callup Brendan Ryan, whose all-time first card is #17 in the 2002 Team Set. A card recognizing his addition to the Cardinals’ major league roster was produced as part of the 2006 Team Set.
Surely, the business aspect of producing highly sought baseball cards is exciting, but once that intial thrill wore off, the card designers took a much more mature approach to the opportunities presented -- making artistic pieces which not only satisfy the collectors, but which also provide a more intimate look into the lives and characteristics of the ballplayer, with a particular focus on what made their summer in Fairbanks such an enduringly important time in their life. Sometimes these scenes are thrilling, sometimes humorous, and sometimes poignant -- such as the “checklist card” for the 2004 Midnight Sun Game Centennial Set, which recounts the devastation of the great fire of 1906, and the exhilaration of the spirit-revival supplied by the first sun game exactly one month after.
Goldpanners GM Don Dennis’ sons Steve and Todd are enthusiastic card collectors. Scratch & Spit Baseball Cards was born out of their love for the game, and for collectible representations of Alaska Goldpanners. These days, Dennis’ grandson Tom is involved with the operation, taking amazingly insightful photographs for use on the cards.
