And Speaking of David
Clyde...
Overall first draft pick David Clyde, who was set to pitch in Growden Park
in June of 1973, found himself instead pitching in Arlington Stadium for the
Texas Rangers. This sort of meteoric rise is well known to the Alaska
Goldpanners of Fairbanks. In fact, out of twenty players to have made their
professional debut in the majors, six are Goldpanners ! They are: Dave
Winfield (June 1973 with San Diego), Eddie Bane (June 1972 with Minnesota),
Dave Roberts (June 1971 with San Diego), Pete Broberg (June 1971 with
Washington) , Steve Dunning (June 1967 with Cleveland) and Mike Adamson
(June 1967 with Baltimore). One of the others to have made the leap, Burt
Hooten, was the winning pitcher against the Goldpanners in the 1969 Midnight
Sun Game!

| Major League Goldpanners
Among the 1,200 rostered players and coaches through the 2008 season to have donned a
Goldpanners uniform, hundreds have continued their careers into
professional baseball, with 190 players having made it all the way to
the pinnacle of baseball in the major leagues. The all-time team roster
also includes many great coaches and field managers, including current
MLB managers Don Wakamatsu (83) Terry Francona (78), and
Major League Hall of Famers Tom Seaver and Dave Winfield.
If the truest measure of the
quality of an amateur team is the number of players it sends to the
professional ranks, then the Goldpanners certainly rank as the greatest
program in baseball history. In addition to having sent hundreds of
players to the professional ranks, the Goldpanners also celebrate one of
the most colorful and decorated draft histories of amateur baseball..
and one that crosses traditional boundaries into other major sports as
well.
In June of 2008, many
more former Goldpanner athletes were added to the list of those who have
been drafted or signed into professional ball. Topping the list was 2005
Goldpanners infielder Allan Dykstra (05), who was the first round draft
pick of the San Diego Padres. In 2007,
Goldpanners infielder Beau Mills (06) also joined the long list of players to
have gone from Fairbanks to the first round of the MLB player draft. On
June 7th, he was chosen 13th overall by the Cleveland Indians. In
2008 the Goldpanners repeated the feat when Allan Dykstra (05) was
drafted 23rd overall by San Diego.
Through the years, the
Goldpanners have enjoyed an amazing string of first round draft picks.
In addition to the many first round draft picks, the club has also had
many players chosen first overall, starting with the first player ever
drafted - Rick Monday.
In addition to those taken
first overall is a list of players who were mere days away from making
their Goldpanner debuts before being drafted first overall and choosing
to sign professional deals instead. Included in this group are Ron
Blomberg, Steve Foli, Jeff Burroughs, Danny Goodwin and David Clyde.
A letter from Clyde actually
survives in which he expressed his profound disappointment at not being
able to be a Goldpanner. Darryl Strawberry, first overall choice of the
New York Mets in 1980, was actually in uniform with the eventual NBC
champion Goldpanners before being instructed by his agent to leave the
club prior to his debut.
One other name worth
mentioning in this category is Roger Clemens, who was set to play for
the Goldpanners before being drafted and signed by the Red Sox. Had he
pitched for the team, there would have been two future MLB Hall of
Famers - Clemens and Barry Bonds - on a single Panner ballclub!
In addition to having had
draft picks in the baseball ranks, the Goldpanners have also seen their
athletes tabbed for selection by other major sports as well. NFL picks
include Dan Pastorini, who was taken third overall in the 1971 NFL draft
by the Houston Oilers, and Dave Winfield, who was drafted in the 13th
round by the Minnesota Vikins in 1973. Winfield actually has the
distinction of being the only player in history to have been drafted by
four teams in three different sports. In addition to Dave’s selection by
the Vikings, he was also chosen by the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks in the 5th
round, by the ABA’s Utah Stars in a supplemental round, and also by the
San Diego Padres -- with whom he eventually starred -- as the fourth
overall pick in the 1973 MLB amateur draft.
More recently, the
Goldpanners had two first rounders taken in the 2001 draft : Aaron
Heilman of the New York Mets, and Bobby Crosby of the Oakland A’s. Other
notable first round draftees include Goldpanners Field Manager Tim Gloyd,
who was picked 18th overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1977
amateur entry draft. For more information on all of the 2007 draft
picks, visit the
Goldpanners Professionals Page.
