MIKE LISSMAN
#6

WRITTEN BY ANDY STERNS

Starting pitcher Reid Hamblet was playing a slightly different game than the rest of his Goldpanner teammates Monday night.

Hamblet was staked to a solid four-run lead after just one inning of play against AIA, in a game that turned into a 12-4 Goldpanner rout - courtesy of three consecutive free passes issued by Fire starter Tyler Miegs, followed by a towering Mike Lissman grand slam; but Hamblet, the sophomore strikeout machine from BIOLA University, said he kept pitching nearly the same way he would if the game was on the line.

"You've got a big cushion," said Hamblet. "But you compete the same way you do in a scoreless game."

The one concession that Hamblet said he was willing to make, once the Panners continued to pile on the runs- scoring one more in the second inning , two in the third (courtesy of another Lissman home run), two in the fifth, and three in the sixth- was that he tried to throw more strikeouts.

"Most of the two-strike pitches were well in the zone," said Hamblet, who struck out the side in the first inning, and recorded 10 strikeouts total in seven full innings of work, before closer Ryan Shaver came in to pitch the final two innings, while striking out five more Fire hitters. "If they get a few hits it just means you're being aggressive, and you can do that when you get a big lead to work with. I think everybody who goes out there to pitch, who throws strikeouts, that's what they're trying to do. You feel the best when you watch that guy just walk back to the dugout."

Lissman had only one hit in the Panners previous three games- a weekend series sweep of the Mat-Su Miners- but he totally turned things around at the plate with his two home run, six RBI night, on Monday.

"Some days you just come out and feel good and see the ball well," said Lissman. "This is the best game I've had all year. I was just trying to hit the baseball again; see the ball, hit the ball. Some days you get a break. You hit the ball off the end of the bat and they catch it or it goes through. I was 0-4 yesterday; you never know."

Lissman also said that watching Hamblet go to work in the first inning had a big influence on the way the team approached their first at-bats.

"To see your pitcher come out, bam, bam, bam, and throw three strikeouts in the first inning; that made everyone more confident" said Lissman. Everybody looked more confident at the plate; and Reid dealt. He threw a hell of a game."

Brandon is back.

Goldpanner first baseman-catcher Brandon Morris made a pinch hitting appearance in the eighth inning Monday night; and lined a rocket shot right back at AIA reliever Brett Cory, for the first out of the inning. But the smiles, handshakes and high fives he received from his teammates and coaches when he returned to the dugout, made it clear that there was something special about that at-bat.

In a June 18 game against the Oceanside Waves, Morris twisted his knee rounding third base and hadn't played since. He had arthroscopic surgery of the meniscus just 2½ weeks ago

"It feels great," said Morris, when asked what it was like to be playing again. "I want to get a chance to contribute to the team and bring something to the table. Everyday I've been rehabbing, the next day after surgery, and every day since.

And what about that near base hit his first time back at the plate?

"That's how it goes," said Morris, with a smile. "That's baseball."
