Grand Rapids, Mich., continued its hard-hitting with an 11-1 win over Fairbanks in the NBC championship game. The Sullivans, capturing their third national crown, batted .370 for the tourney. Only in an 8-0 defeat at the hands of Hutchison, Kan., early in the tournament did Grand Rapids' bats take a day off. The Sullivans pounded out 15 hits in the title game. The hits included a two-run homer by designated hitter-outfielder Curtis Morgan, who hit .347 in the tourney and drove in 17 runs. He was named the Most Valuable Player. Pitchers Randy Ford and Jeff Paradise teamed for a two-hitter in the title game. Ford allowed only one hit in 5 2/3 innings and struck out 11 while Paradise struck out four in 3 1/3 innings, giving up only one hit. Fairbanks was one of the tourney's most entertaining teams with a spectacular outfield that included Stanford's Mark Davis in left, Arizona State's Oddibe McDowell in center and Shane Mack from UCLA in right. Barry Bonds was used at first base during the tourney.
