6/18/9: Dan Pastorini: A Message from Dan Pastorini - 2009 Alumni Inductee
Ex Houston Oilers Quarterback Dan Pastorini Test Runs his Lamborgini Gallardo GTR in Houston Texas.
Dan will be racing in the Speed GT series.4/4/9: Dan Pastorini (68;09 MSG) Pastorini hires Chip Herr "After Sebring, I felt we needed someone with experience that can give the necessary information to the crew in order to maximize the performance of the DP7 Gallardo GTR. I had a chance to visit with many drivers, but Chip is a special individual with all the ingredients to accomplish what team owner Betty Johnston and I wanted and thats to make this program successful.
Chip: "To be asked to work with Dan Pastorini and the DP7 crew is a dream come true for me. Yes, DP7 is an excellent organization and the Lamborghini is a great car, but holy smoke, Dan Pastorini wants ME to drive HIS car!"
- June 19, 1968: 4-for-5, 3 RBI vs. Santa Clara Broncos
- June 21, 1968: 1b, 2b, RBI vs. Santa Clara
June 29, 1969: "Dan should be feeling like a champ now with his girl friend due in town either today or tonight. Pastorini's girl friend just happens to be Miss Teen of 1967. Dan may end the game quickly tonight."
- July 2, 1968: 3-for-4 with 2 runs
- July 16, 1968: 3-for-4, 2 runs, 1 rbi
July 18, 1968 News-Miner: "A Growden field ground rule took a home run away from Dan Pastorini in the fourth inning. Pastorini ripped the second pitch served up by Hansen on a line drive that looked as though it would land on top of the Curling Club, which is across the street about 430 feet away. It hit a power line in left field and dropped into the awaiting hands of leftfielder Jim Williams. Since the power lines are in play at Growden, the well-hit ball ended up being a long out."
July 22, 1968 News-Miner: "Dan Pastorini, who had a home run taken away from him Wednesday when his clothesline drive struck a power line in leftfield and dropped into the hands of the Bellingham leftfielder for a heart-breaking out, made sure it wouldn't happen again with a cannon-type drive over the left centerfield barrier in the second inning for his second homer this season."
July 31, 1968 News-Miner: "Dan Pastorini, who looks like he would fit in a lead role of a Tarzan picture, hit two successive home runs in the third and fourth innings giving the Panners three runs. The California youngster, who attended Santa Clara, hit a solo blast to lead off in the third inning and came right back to uncork a two-run homer in the next frame."
Dante "Dan" Anthony Pastorini (born May 26, 1949 in Sonora, California) was an American football quarterback who played for 12 seasons from 1971-1981, and 1983. He played for the Houston Oilers, Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Rams, Philadelphia Eagles, all of the National Football League.
NFL career
Dan Pastorini was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the 1st Round (3rd Overall) of the 1971 NFL Draft out of Santa Clara University. He was part of a prized trio of college quarterbacks taken with the top 3 picks that year, Jim Plunkett (1st) and Archie Manning (2nd) being the others.
Pastorini was known as a tough quarterback throughout his career. From 1971 through 1979, Pastorini missed only 5 regular season games, playing through the pain of broken ribs and even a punctured lung at times. He did not play behind what would be considered a quality offensive line until 1977 when the Oilers hired Joe Bugel as offensive line coach.
In the 1978 playoffs, Pastorini fared very well, helping lead the Oilers to wins over the Bob Griese-led Miami Dolphins and AFC East division champion New England Patriots.
Pastorni's last game as a Houston Oiler was the 1979 AFC championship game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a game which many Oilers fans contended was decided when, in their opinion, the officials blew a call on a Mike Renfro TD reception. Instant replay rules, in any form, were not in effect at the time, so the play could not be reviewed, as it would be in the present day. The best replay angles NBC could provide of the play show Renfro juggling the ball as he went to the ground. It was not clear if he had complete control of the ball when he hit the ground or, if he did, if he was inbounds if he had possession. The play was a major turning point in the momentum of the game, which resulted in a Steeler triumph.
Later in 1980, Oilers owner, Bud Adams, traded Pastorini to the Oakland Raiders, in exchange for an aging Ken Stabler, who was 3 years Pastorini's senior.
Five weeks into the 1980 season with Oakland, Pastorini broke his leg. Jim Plunkett, a former Heisman Trophy winner who had been with the Raiders as a backup quarterback since 1978, took over and led the Raiders to a Super Bowl victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Pastorini's best season came in 1978 when he threw for a career high 2,473 yards and 16 touchdowns, leading the Oilers to the AFC Championship game. Pastorini was also named to the 1975 AFC Pro Bowl Team. The NFL We Knew - "Another film, The Championship Chase, reviews the 1974 NFL campaign. Portraits of notable teams are interspersed throughout the retrospective. The Houston Oilers merit a short segment for going 7-7 after years of futility. Their final game is featured, a home date against the Cleveland Browns. Dan Pastorini hits Billy Johnson in the endzone to snatch victory during the final seconds, securing the .500 finish. Jubilant Oilers hoist a reluctant Sid Gillman onto their shoulders.
I was at that game. My father took me, my very first NFL game at the Astrodome. I vividly recall the last-second touchdown, and Gillman being carried off the field. Id forgotten that the Oilers played in their away jerseys that day, and that they wore blue helmets. Regardless, the emotions I experienced remain vibrant, gleaming all the more because I shared them with my dad."
Dan's Racing Career: Competed in NHRA Top Fuel class from 1985 - 1990, winning the 1986 Top Fuel Southern Nationals. Finished seventh in the NHRA points in 1986 and 1987. Finished third in the 1987 IHRA Top Fuel points. Entered GTU Porsche in 1991 and 1995 Daytona 24 Hours and Sebring 12 Hours. Raced with Porsche Club of America and SCCA Club Racing from 2003 - 2007. Spent 2008 preparing DP7 Racing's Lamborghini Gallardo GTR for SPEED GT.
Personal: Dan is a law enforcement technology consultant for DataWorks, but first job was working as a busboy in his parents' restaurant. Former NFL star quarterback of 12 years, most notably for the Houston Oilers. Drives a Ford Edge on the street. Enjoys Italian food and the TV show Boston Legal. Lists Watkins Glen as his favorite track and Caroll Shelby as his racing hero. Has one daughter, Brahna.
