1993 MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
"If first baseman/outfielder Travis Lee never gets another hit, drives in another run, steals another base or chases down another fly ball, the youngster from Olympia, WA has carved a niche in the lore surrounding the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks. Travis Lee simply batted .365, stole 12 bases, drove in 40 runs and had 20 extra base hits to win Most Valuable Player honors on the 1993 team that came out victorious in the first ever season of the Alaska Baseball Federation. Lee, who was then playing out of Capitol High School in Olympia, WA, was not even on the Goldpanners roster to start the year. In fact, he was only slated to spend a week in Fairbanks and work out with the club. Instead, what happened is the stuff from which legends are made. Impressive in his workouts, he was slipped into a uniform by Manager Jim Dietz and inserted into a non-league game. The rest is history. Within a week he was a regular and not only that, but he was batting in the middle of a lineup which produced a 36-23 record en route to winning the Federation and finished runnerup at the Grand National Tournament in San Diego. Lee became the first ever incoming college freshman to be named to the Alaska League All-Star Team and posted the best numbers by far for such a young player. In actual fact only a handful of players just leaving high school have ever played in the Alaska League and for the Goldpanners the number is only a half-dozen over the 34-history of the team." |
