7/27/7: Jim Dietz (70-71-72-73-74-75-76-77-90-91-92-93) Hall calls Mr. Padres, courtesy of Mr. Dietz "I don't know how many major leaguers played for me," Dietz said, "but one thing I do know is that every athlete that went on to be successful had a strong family that supported the coaches and whatever they were trying to do."
5/9/7: Field maintenance part of the job for Bob Parry "I played for Jim Dietz at San Diego State, and you learned to do everything," Parry said. "Certainly, we learned how to play the game, but Coach Dietz taught us how to prepare a field, rake, drag, line and dry it out after a rainstorm -- even if it meant setting the infield dirt on fire." Dietz, who built a field at San Diego State from scratch before there was a Tony Gwynn Stadium, had a motto -- "When in doubt, water." So, like Dietz, you'll catch Parry watering when he has lineup decisions to make."
3/28/4: Back home in Oregon, Dietz keeps line wet, powder dry - "He declined an offer to coach in the summer Alaskan league where he once was a regular. "Too much on the plate this year," he says. "Maybe later." | 5/23/00: Wins MWC Championship 7/18/91: Baseball Under the Midnight Sun | ||
